Respecting Objects

Moshe Ben-Chaim

Reader: I just read the answer given to the question "What exactly is idolatry?"I have a question specifically regarding the following excerpt: projections of authority onto other objects or beings. Would you consider it idolatry to make signs of respect toward an inanimate object?Looking forward to your thoughts.

Mesora: I would consider that idolatry. Showing respect to that which cannot perceive such respect predicates a false and dangerous notion that the thing deserves honor. In Judaism, we respect God and Torah. Therefore, we do show respect for the Torah, but not because it has consciousness, but because of the ideals contained therein. We must always elevate the ideational and respect that which is connected to it. This is done as an expression of what we value, not because the object respected is "aware".
